An Investigation into the Education Affection of Middle School Teachers of English in the Context of New Curriculum Reform

【正文】Abstract:  New Curriculum Reform (NCR), which pays more attention to the development of students’ affection, is the trend of today’s education. Students’ affection experience mostly comes from the teachers’ affection in the process of teaching. Effectively promoting the development of teachers’ education affection, in some degree, decides the success of teaching. The main target of this paper is to investigate the middle school English teacher’s education affection in the context of NCR. Through an investigation, which includes three aspects: teachers’ motivation, attitude and interest, the researcher studies the current situation of  English teachers’ education affection in the context of NCR and explores a way to promote the development of teachers’ education affection efficaciously.

  Ⅰ. Purpose and Significance
  Teachers’ education affection influences the students in a direct way , especially for the younger age students. Teacher’s education affection of love is an honorable quality. What’s more. It’s also a means of education, which plays an important role in teaching process(周 60). New Creative Reform (NCR), which pays more attention to the development of teachers’ affection, is the trend of today’s education. Promoting the development of teachers’ education affection, in some degree, decides the success of teaching.
  The researcher thinks that teachers’ motivation, attitude and job interest are the factors that effect the teachers’ affection. Teachers’ motivation is the intrinsic power to push forward the teacher to do the fixed behavior and activities well. Motivation encourages the teacher to be enthusiastic in the job, decides whether the teacher participate in the education activities with persistence, relates to how hard the teacher to do their job, and finally effects the standards of teacher’s job maturity and specialty behavior. Teachers’ attitude consists of cognition, affection and intention. Teachers’ attitude is the only important factor to promote the self-start for the study of students. Teachers’ interest refers to a teacher loves his job or not. It’s a tendency of one’s job selection and attitude. Depending on the research, if a person is interested in his job, he can not only develop 80%-90% of all his talent in the job, but also can keep a high efficient for a long time and can never feel tired. However, if a person feels boring about his job, he can only develop 20%-30% of all his talent and feels exhausted easily(周其洪 12-14). 
  Therefore, the researcher investigates the middle school English teachers’ affection in the context of NCR through these three aspects. Through the investigation, the researcher analyzes the current situation of teachers’ affection in the context of NCR and explores a way to stimulate the teachers’ motivation, which is helpful for teachers to cultivate a positive education affection to promote the development of education career.
  Ⅱ. Investigation
  A. Introduction of the investigation’s subjects
   The researcher made the investigation about 17 English teachers in No.10 middle school and 13 students in Shi Hezi University.
  B. Introduction of the methods to do the investigation
  The researcher did the investigation with 30 questionnaires, which include teachers’ motivation, attitude and interest the three aspects of teachers’ affection.
  C. Analysis on the data.
  The following is the analysis of the data from the questionnaires. 
  1. The questions 2, 4, 15, and 16 are about the teachers’ motivation.
  From the second question, which is about the teachers’ job motivation, it’s not difficult to find that more than half of the teachers chose to be a teacher because of stability and the good treatment. More than one third teachers think it’s the fond of staying with the students that attracts them to be teachers. 13.33% teachers chose the job because of their thought that education is very important for the development of China. No one chose the second answer “the feeling of being respectable”. From this we can get the idea that teachers’ welfare is almost good enough.
  The forth question is about the teachers’ achievement motivation of being a good teacher. 73.33% teachers think this kind of motivation comes from the realize of themselves’ values. 16.67% teachers believe it is from the self-consciousness of being a manager. 6.67% teachers think it’s from the daily stronger feeling of crisis. While, other 3.33% teachers think it’s from their special feeling about Alma Mater.
  The fifteenth question is about the teachers’ continuous study motivation. To achieve self-professional development takes 76.67 %.To satisfy the needs of much more salary and better welfare takes 6.67%, which takes the same proportion as the motivation to meet the needs of competition. Also there’s 10% teachers chose the answer “to achieve personal interest of pursuing knowledge”. Therefore, the school leaders should provide more chance for the teachers to take part in the continuous study training.
  The sixteenth question is about the teachers’ motivation of creativeness in teaching. 66.67% teachers think they carry out creativeness in teaching for the need of students’ development. 16.67% teachers do it for satisfying the needs of local society and the students’ parents. 13.33% teachers do it to meet the upper education department and schools’ demands. The motivation to make condition for the title of the professional post and promoting to a higher office. 
  2. The questions 1, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 are about teachers’ attitude.
  From the first question, we can easily get the teachers attitude toward their jobs. 40% teachers treat teaching as their career. It means that they are willing to make some sacrifice for it. Half of the teachers take it as an occupation. It means teaching is a only a way to make a living for them. 10% teachers just take it as a temporary job, which means they are waiting for other better jobs. From this, we can see many teachers don’t like the job very much. It is dangerous. How can you make sure that the teachers will get a great achievement in the work without passion?  
  The fifth question’s answer tells us that every teacher will give the students a help when they can’t answer the question that relate to the old knowledge. It’s the basic reasonable attitude toward students. There is no answer of punishment and ignoring.
  In the sixth question, we learn the teachers’ attitude toward students’ study methods. Only 13.33% teachers chose to teach students the study methods regularly. 3.33% teachers chose to teach when it is necessary. 83.33% teachers insert this kind of teaching in lessons. And in the ninth question,43.33% teachers always correct students’ mistakes in study methods.40% teachers often do this. There are still 16.67% teachers seldom do it. Study methods is very important for students. Teachers should properly adjust their attitude and pay more attention to it.
  It’s a very wonderful thing that teachers’ attitude toward homework designment has changed. From the seventh question we can see 40% teachers pay great attention to the diversification of the homework. 20% teachers design homework according to the real situation of different students. However, there are still 6.67% teachers mainly give students the task of copy and recite. The researcher think that teachers should have a correct attitude toward the homework designment. Let students control the key points of knowledge in a pleasant way.
  A teacher is not only a participator but also a researcher of teaching. Teaching research is an effective way to raise teachers’ teaching standards. Through the eighth question, we can see most teachers always rethinking their teaching. But the teachers who do teaching research actively and get a success in it only take 3.33%. 10% teachers do the teaching research program when asked by the school. Even 13.33% teachers have no time to do it for the heavy teaching task.
  3. Questions 3, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14 are about teachers’ interest.
  The answer of question 3 shows us that 43.33% teachers like their occupation. And 53.33% teachers neither like nor dislike it. There are also 3.33% teachers have the other feelings.
  As for New Curriculum Reform of English in middle school, 76.67% teachers are interested in it and can carry it out basically. 10% teachers are very interested in it and can carry it out easily. However, there are 6.67% teachers who are not very interested in it and seldom carry it out. And 6.67% teachers have no interest in it and do it perfunctorily. From the statistics, we must notice that it’s necessary to make known of the New Curriculum Reform and encourage the teachers to carry it out in their teaching.
  Question 11 is about teachers’ opinion preparing lessons collectively. The answer shows us that 43.33% teachers are very interested in it and take part in it actively. 36.67% teachers are interested in it and are willing to take part in it. However, 13.33% teachers feel it dull and take part in it reluctantly. Even 6.67% teachers think it’s unnecessary and find reasons to escape from it. The school leaders should pay more attention to stimulate the teachers’ motivation to preparing lessons collectively. Because it’s a very important way for them to learn from each other.
  Question 12 investigates whether the teachers use the new methods to teach new teaching materials. 56.67% teachers often adopt new methods. 36.67% teachers try the new methods occasionally. 6.67% teachers adopt the old methods like before. No one’s teaching methods are completely like before. It is a good phenomena. But we still need to encourage teachers to adopt the new teaching methods.
  Question 13 is about the teachers’ interest in teaching materials. 53.33% teachers can properly adjust the content of the teaching materials. And 36.67% teachers can exploit the curriculum resources beyond the teaching materials. What’s more , 10% teachers replenish something new to the teaching material. No one totally follow the teaching material.
  Question 14 is about the teachers’ interest in using students’ self-study, cooperative study and researching study in English class. 46.67% teachers often use these methods. 46.67% teachers use these several times. However, 6.67% teachers seldom use these methods. In the context of NCR, these methods should broadly used in the teaching, which are very good for students’ further developing.
  D. Solution
  From the result of the investigation, the researcher gets the basic idea of the teachers’ affection in the context of the NCR. The researcher thinks that stimulating teachers’ motivation is very important. If the teachers have strong motivation in the job, they will be more interested in teaching and have correct attitude toward teaching. So, the researcher suggests a way to stimulate teachers’ motivation in management, training and evaluation system the three aspects as following.
  On the aspect of management, the methods of schools’ management is the key point affect the teachers’ development, which is also a guide of teachers’ development. The way, providing the teachers relax working environment, democratic management methods and the right to take part in management, can enhance their place in the occupation and let them have a sense of being the masters of their own affairs. Then they will pay more attention to schools’ development. Also, it increase the communication and trust between the teachers and the administration members. In this way, teachers will have a strong sense of adscription and will continuously put motivation in their teaching.
  As for training, school leaders should set up the idea “Training is the biggest welfare” and try to create convenient conditions for teachers to join all kinds of professional work training. These will meet the teachers’ demands of self-development. Because in such a daily stronger competition nowadays, it’s the  strengthening of the construction of teachers troop that is a very important task in management work for many schools. Teachers themselves also have the sense of crisis in such a strong competition. Therefore, through all kinds of training, teachers want to improve their professional work level and be succeed in the future competition. The training includes resources sharing, experience exchange and the communication among teachers about the problems in teaching they caring about. While formal training includes regular small-size discussion and large-size seminar. These will effectively stimulate teachers’ motivation.
  Teachers’ evaluation system is very important for education. It affects teachers’ development in three aspects. The first is the function of orientation. Teachers’ evaluation can stimulate their initiative. It leads teachers to the direction of being a good teacher. What’s more? It lets them continuously improve their specialized subject level. The second aspect is the function of diagnosis. Through the teachers’ evaluation, teachers can find the advantages and disadvantages in their development. The third function is forecast. According to the result of evaluation, teachers can reasonably find their next aim and find the breath in their development.
  In the context of New Curriculum Reform, teachers’ evaluation system need have these features. First, school leaders should pay attention to teachers’ future development and their developing creative power. Second, they should focus on teachers’ personal value, ethics value and professional value. Third, let the teachers initiatively and actively participate in the management work. Forth, as the persons who organize the evaluation, school leaders should have good creative consciousness and creative power. They should pay attention to long period goal. In a word, this kind of evaluation system promotes teachers’ development and increase their personal quality.
  Ⅲ. Conclusion
  The researcher investigates the middle school English teachers’ affection in the context of NCR through teachers’ motivation, attitude and interest the three aspects. As for teachers’ motivation, the researcher mainly studies the teachers’ job motivation, the motivation of creativeness in teaching, continuous study motivation and achievement motivation. The study of teachers’ attitude interest is mainly on the teaching job, as well as the new forms of teaching. Through the analysis of the result, the researcher explores a way to stimulate the teachers’ motivation. What’s more? The researcher explores a way to let teachers cultivate positive attitude and varied kinds of interest. All these are helpful for teachers to cultivate a positive education affection to promote the development of education career.
